The Gee’s Bend Quilters Collective and the Gee’s Bend Foundation are proud to announce the creation of a commissioned quilt for AT&T in celebration of Black History Month 2008. AT&T’s long heritage of serving the African American community stems from the company’s commitment to diversity at every level. The relationship with the Gee’s Bend Quilters Collective is just the most recent effort. First introduced by AT&T through an advertising campaign for broadband, the Gee’s Bend Quilters Collective maintains a quilting style that has been passed down through six generations of African American quilters from rural Alabama. Their work has been recognized by such organizations as New York’s Whitney Museum and the U.S. Postal Service.
As part of an ongoing effort to help preserve African American culture and support the African American community, AT&T sponsored a multi-city college tour, featuring the celebrated Gee’s Bend Quilters Collective. The company wanted to help deliver the group’s inspirational story and ensure its preservation. The tour stops were open to the public and free-of-charge.
In honor of Black History Month 2008, AT&T commissioned 46 members of the Gee’s Bend Quilters Collective to create an official AT&T Gee’s Bend Quilt. These artists, ranging in ages from 19 to 90, worked for 255 hours to complete the piece, which has already become a part of Black History. This quilt symbolizes both the individuality of the quilters’ multigenerational approach to African American art and culture.
Like the common threads that connect us all, AT&T offers a variety of services to help deliver your world — from High Speed Internet and wireless to home phone service and Digital TV. Beyond bringing the pieces of your life together, the company is also pleased to bring people together.
